Thursday, April 30

Good morning! Today's work is fun. I hope you are doing well with three-digit addition and subtraction. I'm going to include a video that you can watch if you need a little extra help.

Click here if you would like to watch a video on three-digit subtraction. And click here if you would like to see a video about three-digit addition.

Remember that your spelling test is tomorrow. Here is the link to SpellingCity if you want to practice there. Or you can practice anywhere. Have you written your words in dirt, sand, or shaving cream? I love doing that. Tomorrow I will give you the code to take the test at Quizizz.

I was working in my yard when I heard a momma robin bird start chirping at me. (I love robins. Can you guess why?) She was NOT happy I was close to her because she was protecting her eggs in a nest. It is way too high for me to even see. I found a Mystery Science about Why Birds Lay Eggs in the Spring. I think you will really like it. Then you can go to Art Hub to learn to draw a robin. You may want to draw a nest with eggs. Or you can also draw a baby bird in a nest. I'd love to see your pictures.

Wednesday - A Bit Wacky for Me

Things have not gone smoothly today. I couldn't find my shoe, and I always put my shoes away. I brushed my teeth and slipped and cut my mouth. Then I had a little mishap with the video. You will see that. Some days are just not as easy as others.

Don't forget to keep practicing the spelling words at SpellingCity. There will be a Quizizz test on Friday.

You can read this week's story, "From Seed to Plant" at ThinkCentral.

This week I saw a show on PBS that made me so excited. Have you seen the show Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum? It is based upon the Ordinary People that Change the World Books. So, I decided to read one to  you and then you can click above to watch the show all about it. Check it out. I think you will love it!

Finally, a math game for you. Have you ever played Garbage? It is really fun. Kids and adults can play. It can be played with one or more people. Click here for the instructions.

Tiptoe Tuesday

When I was a kid, probably around 3rd grade, we had names for each day of the school week. Monday was "Mellow Monday." Tuesday was "Tiptoe Tuesday." Wednesday was "Wacky Wednesday." Thursday was "Thrilling Thursday," and Friday was "French Fry Friday." On Tuesday, we tried to walk everywhere on our tiptoes. It was hard and probably drove our teachers crazy. Also, I bet I had terribly tired toes by the time I was finished. On this Tiptoe Tuesday, we are going to work on time, money, pronouns, sentence writing, and fact families. All good stuff. Let's get started.

If you would like a little more help with pronouns, here is a video. I think it is excellent.

Our new story this week is called "From Seed to Plant." It is all about growing seeds. Click ThinkCentral to read the story.

It is almost time for seeds to start growing here. Have you ever planted a seed? Here is a science experiment you can do at home to see how plants grow. You will need a sandwich size zip close bag; wet paper towel, and some seeds. Bean seeds work best.

And finally, Mystery Doug has a great science lesson on plants and how they grow. Click here for that.

Have a great day!

Time To Work on Time

While you are home learning, I'm here at school learning, too. One of the things I'm trying to learn about is making better videos. Today I learned how to make a video with pictures and music. I will keep trying to make them better. The best things require hard work, patience, and time. Do you think that?

Today we are going to focus on telling time. First, you can watch this crazy video that explains clocks. Then, you can practice telling time with this game. Finally, you can do your packet work.

Let me know how you feel about telling time. You can send me a quick email, comment below, or send me a thumbs up or thumbs down picture.

Remember that we will have a spelling test on Friday. You can still make a Flipgrid. Jerzi and I have made one. We would love to hear from you, too.

I've also be learning a lot about teaching math. One of the most important things we can do to learn math is to play. I sent home a deck of cards and some dice with you so you can play some games. I am going to share some videos of math games, too. I'll share one each day. Go ahead and try it.

Let me know if you try it. I did it with my family. They LOVED it.

Polygons! Polygons!

Today we will be working with polygons. Polygons are shapes with straight sides that are closed. Hexagons, pentagons, quadrilaterals, squares, rectangles, and triangles are some of the polygons we have learned about.

Since we are working with polygons and read about robots, here is a fun art activity for you. You will draw polygons to make a robot. Click here for the robot drawing video. When you finish, I'd love to see your robots.

If you haven't yet, or would like to again, here is the story for Lesson 24 called "Half-Chicken." It is in your Things to Do folder on ThinkCentral. You will find the vocabulary words and some spelling words in the story. Look for those.

New spelling words are at SpellingCity to practice. You can also practice any other way you would like.

Now, I think I will go outside and read today. It should be great! Then I'm going to take a Reading Counts quiz.

National Pink Eraser Day

Hello to all of you! Thanks for checking in. Today's activities are just so 2nd grade. Everything we do today will help you to be ready for 3rd grade. Can you believe you are only six weeks away from being a third grader? You are amazing!!!

Have you been practicing the spelling words? Tomorrow you will do a Quizizz test. Those are fun. You can practice the spelling words at Spelling City. You can practice them any other way, too. Just remember to practice!!!

Today is National Pink Eraser Day. I'm sure grateful for pink erasers. I use them all the time! I bet you used one today. Do you ever wonder how things are made? Click here to see how pink erasers are made. I think it is awesome.

Here is another challenge that you can do with your siblings. It is called the Alphabet Scavenger Hunt. Instructions: Write each letter of the alphabet on a small piece of paper. Next, put each letter out on the floor or on a table. Then, begin searching the house for items that begin with each letter. When you find one, put that item beside the letter. When you are finished, take a picture with your completed Alphabet Scavenger Hunt and send it to me. Let me know which letters were the hardest?
Do you know what GLHF means? It means Good luck and have fun!

Have a great day!

Almost Spring Break!

Hurry! Hurry! Get your work done and then Spring Break begins!

Today we are learning about a.m. and p.m. on a clock. If you are reading this before noon, 12:00, you are doing your work in the a.m. If it is after noon, or 12:00, you are doing your work in the p.m. I've included a video link if you need extra help: a.m. and p.m. video.

Don't forget to take the spelling quiz today at Quizizz. The code is 798888. Good luck! Have fun.

Here's a fun activity to do with your family. The weather is nice. Do it outside. Spell your name with these exercises. My name is Robin, so I start with R. R says to walk like a bear for the count of 5. O says to walk backwards for 50 steps and then skip back. B says to spin around in a circle 5 times. In says to balance on my left foot for a count of 10. And, N says to pick up a ball without using your hands. What? I'll have to practice that. Have fun!

Enjoy your Spring Break!

Whoo Hoo! It Might Be Spring

I am hoping for great weather today. I want to go outside and get some fresh air. Hurry and do your homework so you can go outside, too.

This is kind of a crazy time, isn't it? But, we will get through it. I hope you are still washing your hands lots, using sanitizer when you need, and staying a safe distance away from others. Those things can help us stay healthy. I also hope you are talking to your parents when you start to feel nervous or scared. That helps you feel safe. I want you healthy and safe.

Don't forget to practice your spelling words. You can practice at SpellingCity. Tomorrow you will take the test (like Kahoot!) at Quizizz.

Did you watch Mystery Doug yesterday? I thought it was fun one. Today I thought I would give you a STEM challenge. In this activity you will be an engineer. Click here to get started. Send me a picture of what you build. I'd love to see.

And, here is a brain teaser for to stretch your thinking.

Lots of Fun Ideas in this Blog Post

Good morning! Do you like to draw? Do you like to create? Do you like PBS? If you answered yes to any of those questions, I have a project for you. Idaho Public Television is hosting a poster contest. It is open to anyone. You get to draw your favorite PBS character. All the information you need is here.

In today's assignments, we are going to read about libraries. I LOVE the library. Last week I asked you to make a Flipgrid video about a book you are reading. Jerzi and Finn have both made one. They talk about some great books. Click here for a link to make your own.

Science!!!! I love science, too. Today, Mystery Doug is doing a live science show from his home at 11:00 a.m. I hope you can join him. Click here to see.

Remember, we will have a spelling test on Thursday. It will be a Quizziz test. Those aren't even like tests. They are played like a game. Watch for that. I've sent a SpellingCity link to parents. It is another fun way to practice this week's spelling words. It isn't required, but it is fun.

Monday - and the Beginning of Packet #2

There is a little change for the next two weeks. Instead of doing iStation AND iReady each day, choose one. Then the next day, choose the other. If you don't have iReady, please do iStation each day. Of course, you are free to do them both if you would like.

Now back to our regularly scheduled work.

Now for today's fun. Mystery Doug has a new science lesson for you about magic. I think you will love it. Click the link and enjoy.

Here is the link to learn how to change a quarter into a penny and then back into a quarter. After you have practiced, send me a video. I'd love to see.

Finally, today's math puzzle is another Sudoku. I like these. How about you? Remember, every row, column, and 2x2 block must contain the numbers 1 through 4 once.

Hooray for Arrays!

Some of you asked when we would be learning about times. Well, last week we worked on multiplication. We did x 5 problems. Today we will be working on multiplication pictures. Last week we learned that the times symbol, x, means equal groups of. A picture of a multiplication problem is called an array. Today we will be talking about arrays in our work. If you want to learn more about arrays and multiplication, you can watch the videos I included below. They are great. You don't have to, but I think you will really like them.

Also, I have assigned your first QUIZZIZ quiz. If you do the quiz, you don't have to do the Reading Comprehension paper. Enter the code 791536. Do the quiz and then you are finished. That's it!

Here is a new kind of puzzle for you. It is called Sudoku. You probably have seen one before. This one is for kids. Here are the instructions: Complete the puzzles by filling in the numbers 1-4. Every row, column, and 2x2 block must contain the numbers 1 through 4 once.

And finally, today I went to Disney World! Not really. But I did take a virtual ride on Splash Mountain. Ask your parents if it is okay to click on the link. Remember, stay seated. Keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times. You might get wet!

April 1st - April Fool's Day

Some people say that Wednesday is "Hump Day." Why do you think they say that? I'm sure you can come up with some ideas. Feel free to comment below if you want to share you idea. Remember that new packets will be ready for pick-up, at the school, tomorrow. Pick them up anytime between then and Monday. Bring in your finished work, too. There is a box for them below the packet box.

Here is today's math puzzle. Pick out one or two. You certainly don't have to do them all, unless you would like. I think they are lots of fun.
And, here is a Go Noodle to get you moving on this first day of April.
